COUNTER
installation, 2006

Counter is a mechanical symbol manipulation machine. Strings, levers and weights embody elementary boolean expressions: negation, conjunction and disjunction. These are assembled to a digital counting automata. By turning it on, the machine runs eternally in its inscribed logic. In a loop the system oscillates between mechanical calculation and acoustical memorization. Only the spectator‘s presence is able to disturb this process. Noises caused by the spectator, are recognized and get integrated into the cycle. The mechanical calculation network of the Counter makes the „in between“ of binary machines to an experience. Like a microscope the Counter enlarges the loose states that are generated by our imagination of discret switching.
